Drivers must have their attention focused on the road at all times, not only for their own safety, but also for the safety of their passengers and other road users.

Ways of distraction

Drivers' attention can be distracted in three ways:

  • not to look at the road
  • to think about other things
  • to let go of the steering wheel.

Often all three happen at the same time. e.g. a driver who has to turn his head back to stop kids fighting in the back seat can't keep his eyes on the road or his attention to traffic.

Causes of distraction

Mobile phones and navigation systems via satellite are major distractions. These latter systems must be placed in such a way as to be clearly visible but without obstructing the driver's visibility. Smoking, eating and listening to radios or CDs are also common causes of distraction.

How can we avoid distraction?

Good organization can help us avoid most distractions. Eat or make your phone calls before you start driving. If it is absolutely necessary to answer the phone or deal with the children, pull over to the side if possible to reduce the risk of an accident.
